Bug Week

It took more than a week because of swimming lessons but we had a little fun learning about bugs.

More Bugs!

We crafted and ate our way through The Very Hungry Caterpillar last week.  J had fun telling the story over and over while we figured out what we were supposed to eat each day.  We have done a few crafts and read a lot of books about different kinds of bugs.  He is getting pretty good at telling us about life cycles!

Wednesday...We ate three plums.  We made some fingerprint bugs and used some bug stamps.  J loves getting my inks out and adding his own touches!  K even stamped with us.  We read some great bug books.

On Thursday, we ate four strawberries.  We had plans to go the movies but put up peaches instead.

On Friday, we ate 5 orange...slices.  I couldn't find little oranges so we just counted our slices!  We also read some books about ladybugs.  We did a couple of symmetry activities with ladybugs.  J made a beautiful butterfly using tissue paper pieces.  He also used small storytelling materials to retell the story.  I didn't have my camera with me so I didn't get pictures of that.

It took us two days, Saturday and Sunday, to get through the all of the desserts the caterpillar ate through on Saturday but we did it!  Chocolate cake, ice cream cone, pickle, salami (bologna), cheese, cherry pie, cupcake, watermelon, sausage, and a lollipop.  Actually, we never ate sausage but that's all we missed!  I made a chocolate cake for Sunday lunch and I took cupcakes to the bike parade.  Hostess helped with the cherry pie and we had a bologna and American cheese sandwich for lunch Saturday.  I made green leaf sugar cookies for Sunday because after all the sugar on Saturday we definitely had a stomachache and needed the green leaf!

We had a great week celebrating Eric Carle's birthday!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Yesterday was Eric Carle's birthday.  We had a busy day but celebrated by reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and eating our way through one apple.
Today we ate our way through two pears.  We also did a few crafts and read several books about the life cycle of a butterfly.
We made a caterpillar using balloons.  I needed smaller balloons but this worked.  I found the idea HERE.

While J painted with balloons, K "finger painted".  I put paint in baggies and taped them to the table.  She mushed the paint around.  It was great!

We put bug stickers on paper.

Then swatted them!  This would be fun with a big piece of paper outside.

K even did it!  Idea found HERE.

I painted their faces.  J loved this!  I did his first and K watched.  She was pretty excited about getting her face painted too.

We read books.

I had these from my teaching days.  I hung them on our dining room wall (a.k.a. our school room!).  J is using them to retell the story.

I hung up the stages in the life cycle and after reading several books about it, J put smaller pictures in order.

I will share the rest of our Eric Carle activities at the end of the week!
